Recent estimates indicate there are approximately 4 million acres of wetlands remaining in North Carolina, covering about 12% of the state (Fish and Wildlife Service, 2020). Other wetland types are found across the state from the mountains to the coast ( Figure 1). North Carolina hosts a variety of wetland types, with vast riverine and estuarine wetland areas concentrated primarily in the coastal plain.
